What is a warrant canary?

Certain legal orders — particularly those issued under national security legislation — can prohibit a recipient from disclosing that the order exists. A warrant canary works by stating, regularly, that no such order has been received. If the statement ceases to be updated, or is removed, the absence itself communicates what a gag order would prevent us from saying directly.
